Gapminder makes its way to the desktop

You've seen the presentation. You've seen the motion graph tool. But up until now, the data exploration tool, Trendalyzer, has always been in the browser. Now you can download the desktop version, and keep everything on your own computer with Gapminder Desktop:

Gapminder Desktop is particularly useful for presentations as it allows you to prepare your graphs in advance and you won’t need an Internet connection at your lecture or presentation.

In the "list of graphs" you will get at preset list of graphs on the left side, but you can also very easily create your own favorite examples. Simply arrange the graph the way you want it and click “bookmark this graph”. Your example will the appear in your own list of favorite graphs. Perfect when you want to prepare a lecture or presentation.

Basically, it's the exact same thing as the online version as an Adobe Air application, which is handy for all you motion graph fans out there.

See the always excited Hans Rosling describe Gapminder Desktop in the video below:

PD's for online merchants

Optometrists around the world will see this and tremble. In the interests of "fair competition" they might be required to work for free for internet businesses

If the General Optical Council thought it might enjoy a period of peace and quiet in the New Year after reducing fees and cutting costs at the end of last year it will be sadly disappointed.

After what could only be described as an annus horribilis for the GOC it seemed to have pulled things back together by the year end. As 2011 dawns it's no longer the profession that is throwing brickbats at the glossy Harley Street regulator's door but online retailers. The cry is PDs for all.

As Optician went to press a petition for the GOC was heading down the M6 clutched in the indignant hand of Metsuki's Ewan McFarlane (see News). McFarlane has sought the backing of senior MPs in his hope of PDs for all, debated the issue with senior GOC members on Radio 4's You and Yours and secured many column inches in the national media. He also intends to take the issue to the Office of Fair Trading. His demands come as no surprise. The PD is a potential door opener for online spectacle sales.

What should strike the profession as more worrying is the groundswell of feeling from other online retailers on this particular issue. If they win the battle of hearts and minds over PDs, legislation will follow. If the mandatory inclusion of PDs on prescriptions is something the profession wants to avoid, it must counter this activity and fast.

The question is what can be done to stem the tide?
